Kenyan President Attends Groundbreaking Ceremony for Geothermal Project

On October 24,local time, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in Nakuru,Kenya, for PhaseⅠof Menengai Geothermal Power Plant of Kaishan Orpower 22 to be constructed by the company.The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H., President of the Republic of Kenya. Also in attendance were CS for Energy and Petroleum Hon Opiyo Wandayi and other Cabinet members.

The company’s Party Secretary and Chairman Ye Jianhui, Deputy General Manager Chen Zhiming, and Deputy General Manager of the Overseas Business Department of Shanghai Electric Power Construction Wang Feng, were among the invited attendees.

William Ruto stated that the commencement of this geothermal power station is a milestone, representing a historic step for Kenya towards achieving its goal of 100% clean energy generation by 2030.

In his speech, Opiyo Wandayi expressed that Kenya hopes to deepen cooperation with Chinese enterprises to develop renewable energy on a larger scale, thereby achieving the country’s energy conservation and emission reduction goals.

It is reported that Phase I of the Menengai Geothermal Power Project is located in the vicinity of Nakuru, Kenya. This project is part of Kenya's "2030 Energy Plan" and serves as an advanced example of Chinese engineering and construction companies stepping onto the international stage under the Belt and Road Initiative, bringing with them Chinese technology, equipment, and management practices to the local area.

The project with total capacity of 105 MW is consisted of 3 power plant.The company undertook the construction of the first and third power plant.The first power plany by Sosian started operations in June 2023, which is the first geothermal power plant in Africa that has been fully independently completed by a Chinese enterprise from design and product manufacturing to construction and commissioning.
